My latest full detail and the most unique vehicle I have ever done. The 2007 Honda Element is a very purpose built vehicle with some pretty cool features. I give a full exterior, and interior tour, start it up and show the engine. The get a couple of driving clips. I tried to be detailed on the tour because I figured there would be a lot of people curious to see one of these, I know I was! I also show the stock stereo which was really nice. Enjoy everyone!

Before we get deep into our comparison, if you are in the market to buy, you need to remember that all three of the inverter generators that we discuss are fantastic pieces of equipment. I own the Honda and Champion, and my camping buddy has the Yamaha. We both believe that you’d be happy owning any of them. We’re certain that anyone who has owned an inverter generator would agree that the new inverter technology has made “old school” generators redundant. If you don’t understand what makes an inverter generator different and better, you’d be doing yourself a favor by becoming educated on the subject.

Honda Generator Parts

THE BASIC SPEC SHEET COMPARISON…

Honda EU2000i(H)
Yamaha EF2000is(Y)
Champion 73531i(C)

Dry Weight: (H)46.3 lbs – (Y)44.1 lbs – (C)48.0 lbs

Physical Size: (H)2.2 cu.ft – (Y)2.2 cu.ft – (C)3.6 cu.ft

Engine Size: (H)98.5cc – (Y)79.0cc – (C)79.0cc

Decibels 1/4 load: (H)53.0 – (Y)51.5 – (C)53.0

Decibels Full load: (H)59.0 – (Y)61.0 – (C)62.0 (my db meter)

Run Time 1/4 load: (H)9.6hrs – (Y)10.5hrs – (C)9.5hrs

Approx. Price: (H)0.00 – (Y)0.00 – (C)0.00

OUR EXPERIENCES…

At first glance, the differences between the generators is subtle. A spec sheet will only take you so far though. Just as with cars, there are often other things to consider in the periphery that you can’t really know about without a test drive.

Since the spec sheets on the Champion didn’t give any sound ratings at full load, we decided that we should perform own highly scientific test. We grabbed an old Radio Shack decibel meter, a toaster, and a couple of lights. We did the math and that put us at about 1500 watts. Then we walked around the machine at 7 meters and took our highest reading. There is really not much of a difference between the three machines in terms of sound pollution, and any would be welcome in a campground.

We liked the Champion and Yamaha for their controls location. They keep them all together. The Honda “scatters” controls, switches, and the pull cord around the body of the enclosure so that starting it in the dark would be tough.

They say that “there is no replacement for displacement”, and the Honda wins in terms of cc’s. I read that the Honda can operate at 2000 watts for 1/2 hr whereas the Yamaha will only provide 2000 watts for 20 seconds before “cutting out”. I’m not sure what the Champion will do but my hunch is that it would be similar to the Yamaha.

In terms of after sale service, fortunately we haven’t had to test it on any of the machines. The Honda and Yamaha have dedicated dealerships in every major city. Champion has become a well established brand and they have a good parts supply (unlike lots of Chinese built generators) warehoused in the U.S., and local small engine shops easily and quickly source parts for repair.

Hats off to Champion as it has a “cage” built around it. All three machines can be outfitted with parallel kits to enable load sharing at about 3800 watts, but the cage of the Champion is especially nice in that it allows you to stack two generators on top of one another. Functionally it makes no difference, it just looks really slick and clean when load sharing.

As mentioned earlier, all three units have performed flawlessly, always starting by the second pull.

If we had to pick a winner, it would be the Champion 73531i. The only reason that made us think twice about choosing it as the favorite is that it is Chinese made. So far, mine seems well constructed and reliable though. Again, we liked the “cage” on the Champion a lot, but the real knockout punch is that dollar for dollar, it offers the best “bang for your buck”.

Diesel Lister generator set on original trolley. Generator needs work the engine going really well. Starts first time every-time. This is its first run this year, lots of clag, but very clean when running at speed. From serial number which is very difficult to read it says 6000SR118. So I assume its the SR model.

Even though Honda generators have been around for quite some time, people still usually associate Honda with cars. Honda however has been able to produce four major lines of generators. They have poured as much quality into their generators as they have in their cars.

There are different categories and models of Honda generators. They all share certain traits though. Those who have been using portable generators by Honda know that Honda units are durable, easy to use, fuel efficient and are quieter than typical generators. Here are the four major types of Honda generators you can choose from:

* You can get a Honda portable generator from their Super Quiet series. Models include EU1000i, EU2000i and EU3000is. These units live up to their reputation by producing sound as little as 59 decibels. They are also lightweight with the EU1000i weighing only a mere 29lbs. Despite their being quiet and small, they can provide the right amount of power for a variety of purposes with wattage ranging from 1000-5000. These small units can run for extended periods of time. The EU2000i for example can run for as long as 15 hours on a full tank. A super quiet generator is what you need if you don’t want to disturb others while camping or powering small appliances at home during a power outage.

* Next in power and efficiency is the Honda Deluxe series. A Honda portable generator from this group is slightly noisier than those in the super quiet category. These generators are however, considerably still quieter than other generator brand models. There are a variety of features in generators in the deluxe group. Not all units in the group carry the same features. You can choose units from 3800-6500 watts. A couple of the units sport electric starters, AC/DC operation, twin OHC engine and a fuel gauge.

* You can also opt to have a Honda portable generator from the Economy series. This is where you’ll find basic functionality at an affordable price. Even without a lot of other features, these units are still worth considering. The models have a wattage range from 2500-5000. Engine options are also OHC or OHV. That means you get an absolutely sturdy engine that will ensure great fuel efficiency.

* Off site construction work can also benefit from the power of a Honda generator. Depending on the model, a Honda industrial portable generator can have wattage from 3000-10500. These units have large fuel tanks meant for extended use. You can choose a model with a fuel indicator, frame protection and G.F.C.I. protection. Although they are considered heavy duty industrial units, they are surprisingly light and easy to transport. The most basic model weighs more or less 68 lbs and comes with wheels and a hanger kit.

A Honda portable generator is all you will ever really need. With the available models, you can easily pick one for camping, back-up power or construction work. All you have to do to get the right model is to find out your wattage and fuel needs. Honda distributors will also be more than willing to help you pick the right model.
